Body found in pond in Gwinnett County

(Source: Resident) (Source: Resident) GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) – A body was found in a pond near a Gwinnett County apartment complex Saturday. The body was found near the Durant at Sugarloaf Apartments in the 50 block of Marlowe Drive. Police have identified the deceased as 34 year-old Derek Oxford of Lawrenceville. He was reported missing by his girlfriend on February 23. After an initial examination by the Medical Examiner’s office, officials say there are no obvious signs of suspicious activity or trauma, with no need for a criminal investigation. $10 Vaccines For Your Pets On Sunday At Vaccine Clinic

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A Vaccine Clinic will be held Sunday, March 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds at 2405 Suglarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville. The vaccine clinic offers dhpp (dog), lepto (dog), fvrcp (cat), rabies, strongid (cats and dogs), canine influenza and bordatella (cats and dogs) for $10 each (cash only). The also offer micro-chipping for $25. Have your dog on a leash and your cat in a carrier. Proceeds benefit the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia and Operation Second Chance. The event supports the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Jail Dogs/Cats program and saves money at the same time. New Playgrounds To Be Added To 2 Gwinnett County Parks

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Two Gwinnett County parks will soon get new playground equipment and improved handicap-accessibility under a new SPLOST-funded $750,192 contract approved by commissioners on Tuesday. Landscape Structures Inc. was the low responsive bidder to remove and replace playground equipment and surfaces at George Pierce Park in Suwanee and Mountain Park Park in Lilburn. “As always, we’re grateful to voters for their ongoing support of the SPLOST programs that are making these park upgrades possible,” said District 1 Commissioner Jace Brooks. “This new playground equipment will let all kids visiting George Pierce Park enjoy a playground designed for universal access.” Located near the pond and pavilion, it will feature a net climbing tower with flexible platforms, a tightrope and other balance activities, a multi-person seesaw, a multi-person spinner and a small climbing dome. Killing Grandparents: Gwinnett Teens Plead Guilty

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – Two Gwinnett teens pled guilty Friday to beating their grandparents with a tire iron, stabbing and killing Wendy and Randall Bjorge in April of this year, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Cassandra Bjorge, 17, and Johnny Rider, 19 pled guilty to the murders. Bjorge is the granddaughter of Wendy and Randall Bjorge. According to the newspaper, Bjorge was living in the grandparents’ Lawrenceville home when she and Rider, her boyfriend, stabbed them and slit their throats. The grandparents were dead for about a week, according to police. During that time, Bjorge and Rider invited friends over for parties, not telling them about Bjorge’s grandparents dead upstairs, the newspaper reported. Judge Debra Turner said the case was one of the worst she had presided over in her career, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported. About 1,250 Gwinnett Seniors Given Needed Supplies For Holidays

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – Gwinnett County Health and Human Services continued its annual gift bag program that helps local seniors in need during the holidays by working with partners to donate home and personal care items. Of the estimated 1,250 seniors served, 900 received services from Health and Human Services, 300 received services from the six local cooperative ministries, 70 received services from the Lawrenceville Housing Authority, and 50 reside in extended-stay hotels. The donations included new blankets, towels, socks, gloves, detergent, soap, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toilet paper, paper towels, non-perishable food and more. Health and Human Services created the program more than 15 years ago when it recognized an increase in senior needs during the holidays. “Our seniors really appreciate how the community comes together to show that they care about them during this time of year,” said Centers Manager Vivian Gaither.
